Why Join?

Members gain valuable skills and experience while volunteering with our organization. Given that all our programs are managed exclusively at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, there is constant exposure to the entire operational demands of a professional non-profit organization. This means that members will have opportunities to learn about and practice leadership, management, fundraising, teamwork, and marketing. We expect a great deal from our members, but we believe the result is an intense and worthwhile education outside the classroom.

It’s not all work, though. We also have a lot of fun. There are social events and other opportunities to meet fellow members. S4Si members build friendships that last a lifetime.

What Would I Do?

S4Si’s operations are divided among three committees each of which performs critical work.

  • Events – This committee is responsible for the many fundraising and social events that S4Si runs throughout the year. Events such as dance lessons, video game tournaments, and the Auction for Education are planned and executed here. Anyone who loves planning events and connecting people, raising money for a wonderful cause while learning valuable organizational skills, and having fun with great people can find a home in this committee. Talents from planning to publicizing to volunteering at the events are all needed to make this committee and our fundraising efforts a success.
  • Partnerships – Outreach is in charge of connecting S4Si with other organizations on campus and in the community. Committee members identify groups who share an affinity with our mission in hopes of providing better support for our Scholars in Tanzania while raising awareness about our cause. This includes advocates for female empowerment, local mosques, and fellow students in high school. This committee connects our organization with the larger community.
  • Communications – Communications has two main responsibilities. First, the committee manages S4Si’s message and appearance both on campus and in the community. This includes things such as writing press releases for local news organizations, designing t-shirts and other S4Si gear, and keeping our supporters up-to-date with our blog. Second, the committee is in charge of S4Si’s email and internet communications efforts. Our monthly newsletter to supporters is created here.

In addition to serving as a member of these committees, there are opportunities to take on greater leadership as part of the Executive Board. This experience is available to all those who have demonstrated commitment and passion in their time as a committee member. Selections take place in the spring semester.
